Understanding the Service

What Is Supported Living?

Supported living enables people with care and support needs to live as independently as possible — in their own home or in specialist SGE Care accommodation across Essex. Unlike a residential care home, supported living separates the tenancy from the care. This means individuals retain their own legal rights, personal freedoms and the dignity of genuine independent living, whilst ensuring that specialist support is always available when needed.

At SGE Care, we work closely with each person, their family, their social worker and any commissioners involved to design a support package that genuinely fits — today and as their needs evolve over time.

Supported Living

  • Individual holds their own tenancy
  • Care arranged separately to housing
  • Greater personal freedom and choice
  • Support adjusted as needs change
  • Community integration prioritised
  • Funded via LA, CHC or Direct Payment

Care Home

  • Provider holds all tenancy rights
  • Care and accommodation bundled together
  • More structured, fixed-routine environment
  • Less flexibility to adapt support
  • On-site activities focus
  • Usually LA or self-funded only

We build a detailed, SMART support plan tailored to the individual — covering daily routines, specialist support requirements, staffing ratios and the most appropriate accommodation type.

Self-Contained Flats

Private, independent living with on-site or on-call support. Greater privacy and autonomy for those ready for a higher level of independence within a managed environment.
