Three Types of Overnight Care

Which Type of Care Is Right for You?

SGE Care offers three distinct types of overnight and continuous care — each suited to different levels of need.

Sleeping Night Care

A trained care worker sleeps at the client's home overnight and is on-call to respond if needed. Ideal for individuals who are largely settled at night but need reassurance or occasional assistance.

Best for: People who rarely need support during the night but whose family needs peace of mind.

Waking Night Care

A trained care worker remains awake throughout the night, providing continuous active support and monitoring. Suitable for individuals who require frequent overnight assistance.

Best for: People who need frequent or unpredictable support through the night.

Live-In Care

A dedicated care worker lives in the client's home, providing continuous support throughout the day and night. This is the highest level of home-based care — offering genuine 24-hour presence.

Best for: People who need substantial round-the-clock support as an alternative to a care home.

Making the Comparison

Live-In Care vs a Care Home

For many families, live-in care is a genuine alternative to a residential or nursing home — often more cost-effective and almost always better for wellbeing.

How We Match Your Carer

Choosing the Right Live-In Carer Matters

A live-in care arrangement is a significant decision — and the most important factor is the right match. At SGE Care, we take time to understand both the individual's care needs and their personality, preferences and lifestyle before selecting a live-in carer.

We consider skills, experience, cultural background, communication style, shared interests and daily habits. A live-in carer becomes part of the household, and we take that responsibility seriously.

Experience & Skills

Matched precisely to the individual's care needs — personal care, complex care, dementia, physical disabilities and specific medical requirements.

Cultural & Language Fit

Where relevant, we match based on cultural background and language — ensuring comfortable communication and respect for cultural practices.

Personality & Temperament

Live-in care requires genuine compatibility. We listen carefully to understand what kind of person the individual is comfortable with.

Daily Habits & Lifestyle

Sleep patterns, meal preferences, noise tolerance, activity levels and daily routines are all considered when making every live-in care match.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions About Overnight & Live-In Care

A live-in carer requires their own private bedroom in the client's home. This does not need to be large, but it should be comfortable with a lockable door. The carer should also have access to a bathroom and the kitchen and be provided with meals or a meal allowance.

For individuals needing a high level of care, live-in care is often comparable in cost to a residential care home — and for couples, it is frequently significantly more cost-effective, as one live-in carer can support both. Our team will discuss costs openly following your free assessment.

Live-in carers are entitled to two hours of free time per day and one full day off per week as a minimum. During these periods, we arrange a relief care worker to provide cover or the family steps in, depending on what has been agreed in the care plan.

Yes. In many cases, a single live-in carer can support a couple — particularly where one partner has greater care needs. If the level of need is too high for one person to manage safely, we will advise accordingly.

We aim to have a live-in carer in place within five to seven days of the initial assessment for planned arrangements. For urgent situations, we will do everything in our power to arrange cover more rapidly. Please call 07427 667 341 for urgent requests.

We welcome open feedback. If the match is not working well for any reason, we will respond promptly, discuss the concerns and arrange an alternative carer as quickly as possible. Getting this right is as important to us as it is to you.
