Autism Support in Essex
Structured, sensory-aware and communication-sensitive support for autistic adults across Essex — delivered by trained SGE Care professionals who genuinely understand autism.
Autism is not a condition to be fixed. It is a different way of experiencing and interacting with the world. At SGE Care, we start from that understanding and build support around the individual's unique sensory profile, communication preferences and personal goals.
Autism-informed · Sensory-aware · Structured & consistent
Our Autism Framework
The SPELL Framework
Developed by the National Autistic Society, SPELL guides every element of our autism-informed practice.
Structure
We create predictable, well-organised environments and routines that autistic people can rely on. Consistent daily structures reduce anxiety and help individuals feel safe.
Positive Approaches
We focus on what the person can do, what they enjoy and what motivates them. We build on positives and celebrate achievements — never shame or pressure.
Empathy
We genuinely strive to understand the world from the autistic person's perspective — including their sensory experiences and the things that cause anxiety.
Low Arousal
We keep environments calm and sensory-manageable — reducing unnecessary noise, clutter and visual stimulation. We use calm voices and non-threatening body language.
Links
We maintain strong, collaborative links with the individual, their family, healthcare professionals and any other support networks — ensuring care is joined-up.

Frequently Asked Questions
Questions About Autism Support
Yes. Every care worker completes specialist autism awareness training, including the SPELL framework, sensory processing education, autism-informed communication strategies and positive behaviour support. Additional training is provided where relevant — for example, in PDA, Makaton or specific co-occurring conditions.
Predictability and structure are fundamental. Where possible, we give advance notice using agreed methods — visual schedules, social stories, written notices or verbal preparation. For unavoidable changes, we use individual-specific strategies and always debrief afterwards.
Yes. We understand breakdowns are often the result of an environment that was not autism-informed — not a failure of the individual. We invest significant time understanding what has not worked and design the new support package specifically to address those factors.
Our care workers recognise signs of sensory overload and respond calmly — creating space, reducing sensory input, using agreed calming strategies and never physically intervening unless there is an immediate safety risk. We debrief after any significant episode.
Absolutely. We support autistic adults across the communication spectrum — including those who are minimally verbal or non-verbal. Our workers are trained in AAC approaches, visual and object-based communication and careful, patient observation.
