Understanding Learning Disabilities

What Is a Learning Disability?

A learning disability is a significantly reduced ability to understand new or complex information and to learn new skills, combined with a reduced ability to cope independently. Learning disabilities range from mild to profound and multiple (PMLD).

People with learning disabilities are as diverse in personality, interests and aspirations as anyone else. A learning disability is not a barrier to a full, meaningful and happy life — with the right support.

Mild Learning Disability

Lives largely independently, may need some support in specific areas

Moderate Learning Disability

Needs more substantial daily support but can develop many skills

Severe Learning Disability

Needs significant daily support across most areas of life

PMLD

Multiple and complex needs including physical and sensory impairments

Down Syndrome

Chromosomal condition — wide variation in ability and support need

Fragile X Syndrome

Genetic condition, most common inherited cause of LD

How We Work

Our Approach to Learning Disability Support

Everything we do is built around the individual's strengths, preferences and aspirations — not solely around what they cannot do.

Strengths-Based Practice

We start with what the individual is good at, what they enjoy and what they want to achieve — then we build support that enables those strengths to grow.

Active Support

We use the Active Support model — encouraging and enabling people to participate meaningfully in all aspects of daily life, rather than having things done for them.

Person-Centred Planning

Every support plan is developed with the individual at the centre, incorporating their views, their family's knowledge and the goals they have chosen.

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)

Where challenging behaviour occurs, we use evidence-based PBS approaches — understanding what the behaviour communicates and working proactively to prevent distress.

Community Integration

We actively support people to participate in their local community — through work experience, education, volunteering, social activities and community resources.

Communication Support

We adapt communication to each individual — using Makaton, visual schedules, Easy Read materials, objects of reference and any other preferred method.

What We Build On

Building on Every Person's Strengths

A strengths-based approach starts from a different place. Instead of asking "what does this person need?", we ask "what does this person want, and what are they capable of?" — then we provide the right level of support to get them there.

At SGE Care, this means listening carefully, involving the person in every decision and building support that grows gradually less intensive as independence increases.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions About Learning Disability Support

In supported living, the individual holds their own tenancy — preserving legal rights, greater personal freedom and a stronger sense of ownership over their life. In a residential care home, the provider holds all tenancy rights and care and accommodation are bundled together. For many adults with learning disabilities, supported living offers significantly better quality of life.

We use positive behaviour support (PBS) — understanding what the behaviour communicates and addressing the underlying cause. All care workers receive specialist PBS training. We never use restrictive practices as a first response and always prioritise dignity and wellbeing.

Yes. We have experience supporting adults with PMLD, where complex physical, sensory and cognitive needs often co-occur. Support is intensive, highly personalised and involves close collaboration with healthcare professionals, therapists and families.

Yes. All workers complete specialist training including person-centred approaches, PBS, communication strategies (including Makaton), Active Support methodology and condition-specific training for associated conditions such as autism or epilepsy.

Person-centred planning is fundamental. The individual is always at the centre. We use accessible communication methods — Easy Read, visual formats and Makaton — to ensure the person genuinely understands and has a real voice in decisions about their support.

Yes — and we understand how significant this transition is. We invest time in a thorough 'getting to know you' period, introduce the individual gradually and provide ongoing reassurance to the family throughout. We aim to make first moves as positive and empowering as possible.
