Understanding Mental Health
Mental Health Conditions & Their Impact on Daily Life
Mental health conditions vary enormously — some people experience episodic acute distress while others live with chronic, persistent symptoms. What all share is that they are real, they are not a choice and they respond positively to the right combination of treatment and skilled social care support.
At SGE Care, we work alongside NHS community mental health teams, GPs and psychiatrists to provide the social care component of a genuinely joined-up care package.
Depression & Anxiety
Depression and anxiety are the most common mental health conditions — yet they can be profoundly disabling. Our support helps individuals maintain daily routines, stay connected to their community, manage medication and build coping strategies and confidence needed for genuine recovery.

Six Pillars of Recovery Wellbeing
What Genuine Recovery Looks Like
Our mental health support is structured around six key pillars — each of which our care plans actively address.
Safety
A safe environment — physically, emotionally and psychologically — is the foundation of all recovery.
Structure
Consistent daily routines reduce anxiety, improve sleep and create the stable foundation for recovery progress.
Connection
Positive relationships with support workers, family, peers and the community are powerful determinants of recovery.
Meaning & Purpose
Engaging in meaningful activities — education, employment, volunteering or hobbies — is central to sustained recovery.
Empowerment
Recovery happens when people feel in control of their own lives. We support decision-making and self-advocacy.
Physical Wellbeing
Mental and physical health are deeply interconnected. We support good sleep, nutrition and physical activity.

Frequently Asked Questions
Questions About Mental Health Support
SGE Care is not a crisis intervention service — in a crisis, the right first contact is the NHS crisis resolution team or 999/111. However, our workers recognise early warning signs, and our 24/7 on-call means concerns are escalated immediately. We develop detailed crisis prevention plans as part of the care package.
Yes. All workers complete specialist training including Mental Health First Aid, trauma-informed practice, de-escalation techniques and condition-specific modules. Additional training is provided as required — for example, supporting individuals with personality disorders or psychosis.
We provide medication prompting and administration support — reminding individuals, supporting safe management and recording administration accurately. For complex medication regimes, we liaise closely with GPs, psychiatrists and community mental health nurses.
Yes. The transition from inpatient care is one of the highest-risk periods. SGE Care provides step-down support — putting structured, intensive support in place rapidly to help the individual stabilise in the community and prevent early relapse.
We have clear protocols — early escalation to the mental health team, implementation of crisis plans, increased monitoring and close liaison with NHS services regarding higher-level clinical support. We never manage deterioration in isolation.
Recovery Is Possible. We Are Here to Help.
At SGE Care, we believe in the capacity of every person to recover, to grow and to live a meaningful life — regardless of their mental health diagnosis. Talk to our team about mental health support in Essex today.
