The Importance of Connection

Loneliness Is a Serious Health Issue

Research consistently shows that loneliness and social isolation carry significant physical and mental health risks — comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. For older adults, people with disabilities and those living alone, the absence of regular meaningful human contact can lead to accelerated cognitive decline, depression, anxiety, reduced mobility and poorer physical health outcomes.

Yet companionship is one of the most powerful and underutilised tools in care. Regular, genuine social interaction improves mood, sharpens the mind, encourages activity and gives people something to look forward to every day.

At SGE Care, we believe every person deserves company that they genuinely enjoy — not just a presence in the room, but a real connection with someone who listens, engages and cares.

Our Approach

The Right Companion for Every Person

The difference between a good companionship visit and a truly life-enriching one comes down to the match. At SGE Care, we take great care to match each client with a care worker who genuinely connects with them — taking into account personality, communication style, shared interests, language preferences and cultural background.

Our diverse team brings a wonderful breadth of personality, experience and cultural knowledge. Whether a client speaks English as a second language, loves gardening, enjoys reminiscing about a particular era of music or simply wants someone who will listen — we have someone who can provide exactly that.

Personality Fit

We match based on shared values, communication style and temperament — so visits feel comfortable and natural from the very first meeting.

Cultural Alignment

Our diverse team enables us to match clients with care workers who share relevant cultural, linguistic or faith backgrounds.

Shared Interests

Where possible, we match clients with care workers who share genuine interests — music, gardening, sport, cooking or crafts.

What Families Say

Making a Difference, Every Visit

Since SGE Care started visiting my father, I have noticed such a difference in his mood and energy. He has something to look forward to every week, and he talks about his care worker constantly. It has made a world of difference to the whole family.

K.T., Daughter of service user

Romford, Essex

I was very sceptical at first — I am not someone who easily lets strangers into my home. But the care worker SGE Care matched me with is wonderful. She loves the same music I do, and we have the most marvellous conversations. I genuinely look forward to her visits.

M.W., Service user

Rainham, Essex

As someone living far from my mum, knowing she has a regular visitor who genuinely cares about her and will let us know if anything seems wrong gives me enormous peace of mind. SGE Care have been brilliant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions About Companionship Care

Companionship care from SGE Care is a professional care service, delivered by trained, vetted and insured care workers. It is distinct from volunteer befriending schemes, as our care workers are accountable professionals who follow a care plan, record each visit and report anything of concern to our management team.

Visits can range from one hour to several hours, depending on needs and preferences. Many families arrange regular weekly or twice-weekly visits of two to three hours. We can also arrange daily visits for those who need more frequent contact. Everything is built around the individual.

Absolutely. Our care workers are trained to follow the client's lead in all conversation and activity. If there are specific subjects a client wishes to avoid, we document this in the care plan and our care workers respect it fully.

This occasionally happens and it is entirely natural. We take feedback seriously, and if a client or their family feels the initial match is not quite right, we will promptly arrange an alternative. Getting the right match matters to us as much as it matters to you.

Yes. Many clients benefit from a combined visit that includes both companionship and light domestic assistance — such as making a cup of tea together, preparing a light meal, or tidying up — as part of a broader home care package.
